Over the past three years the Hub has been working to ensure the ‘transformation’ aspect of the ITRP program is strongly embedded in the team culture. As one of our key industry engagement events for the year we took the concept a step further.

The TREMS Hub End-of-Year Event took a fresh approach in 2025, bringing together 25 early career researchers and PhD students for a fast paced, two-day program focused on translating complex research into practical industry solutions. Delivered in collaboration with RMIT Activator, the program challenged participants to look beyond the technical detail of their work and consider where it could create the greatest impact in industry.

Working within the Hub’s focus on waste management and circular economy principles, reduce, reuse and recycle, participants explored how their research could contribute to more sustainable and resource efficient systems.

The program began informally before quickly shifting into an energetic exploration of problems and opportunities. Using their own research as a starting point, participants unpacked where real challenges exist, who experiences them most acutely, and where their work could provide practical solutions. By late morning, discussions had moved from research problems to market opportunities, with participants examining where their capabilities could translate into value across different sectors.

Researchers worked through a series of masterclasses supported by a team of industry and academic mentors who challenged thinking, offered advice, and shared practical insights, shaping ideas into propositions that were desirable, feasible and viable. By the end of the day, energy remained high as participants prepared their short pitch presentations.

On day two, researchers delivered concise, focused narratives to peers, industry partners, and TREMS Hub leadership, presenting ideas through a commercial lens. Feedback challenged assumptions, encouraged growth, and supported the translation of technical research into practical solutions for real world challenges.

The event delivered two days of collaboration, creativity, and discovery, highlighting TREMS Hub’s emerging researchers and their ability to transform technical expertise into commercially informed, industry relevant outcomes.
